R.I.P. Ralph McQuarrie

If you're a Star Wars fan in your early 30's, like me, you will of grown up on this guys artwork whether you knew it or not. He was a conceptual artist that worked closely with George Lucas to create the look and feel of Star Wars. I have always been in awe of his paintings and can spend hours looking at them.

"When words could not convey my ideas, I could always point to one of Ralph's fabulous illustrations and say, 'do it like this'." - George Lucas.

Steve Thomas - Star Wars Travel Posters

This series of posters are really something else. Beautifully created whilst in keeping with the original feel of travel posters. A perfectly executed combination of two genres that oozes creativity. I love them and want all eight of them hanging on my wall...if I had the space. It's making me want add more illustration in my own posters.

8-bit ZOMBIE

Mitchy Bwoy - Star Wars

So when Addict called me and asked if I wanted to do a follow up to my successful first round of limited Star Wars tees, I jumped at the chance. I decided to base the new range on Empire Strikes Back so I quickly knocked up a variety based on different characters. Not bad eh?

So this is what I wish I was able to say when people ask me where I got my t-shirt from. What I actually say is, this amazing artist called Mitchy Bwoy did them for Addict and I envy every ounce of his being for being so bloody talented...you better go check all his stuff out and join the sea of artists shouting 'bastard' at their computer monitors.

NEW POSTER - May the 4th be with you.

The happiness and satisfaction that the "Stay on Target" poster gave me, inspired me to do one more based on the ending scene of Star Wars, so now I have my first set of posters, hence the similar design.

NEW POSTER - On Target

All of you Star Wars geeks in the world have to get this one. An idea that just jumped into my mind whilst on the train reading Star Wars comics.

Kellogg’s Jubilee Packaging

Kellogg's are turning back time for the Jubilee by taking their packaging back to1950. They look amazing and because retro is all the rage at the moment, they don't look out of date! Even though I'm not a fan of Coco Pops or Frosties, I may buy them just for the packaging. I did the same with the Limited Edition Absolut Vodka bottle designed by Jamie Hewlett...I don't even like Vodka but I love Jamie Hewlett's artwork. I'm sure I'll blog about him at some point.

New Poster - You and Me

I've done a new poster! All you Big Bad Voodoo Daddy fans will like this one. I decided to keep this one more simple than the others. Also, I couldn't decide on colours so there's two variants of this poster.

I know I'm probably behind the times on this one but I stumbled across this website whilst doing research for the poster I'm doing for Bestival. I've always been a fan of gig posters. It all started with a book I bought from The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles called 'Fucked Up and Photocopied' which was all about punk poster art in the early 80's and was jam packed with amazing examples of experimental and DIY art. Gig posters today have a cleaner feel to them than the cut and paste methods of the early 80's but they've never lost touch with their roots which I think is down to the screen printing methods used. I've always felt that gig posters are the perfect blend of illustration and design with the addition of highly creative typography.

Bestival Poster Competition

Every year Bestival host a poster designing competition. The closing date this year is June 1st. The winning posters are screen printed (so restrictions in the design apply) and are sold at Bestival. I might try and design one for this year.

FedEx Logo - My Favourite Logo

The reason the FedEx logo is on here is because it's my favourite logo. The reason I love it so much is because once you've figured out it's "little secret" you will look at the logo in a completely different way. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, I'll give you a hint...take a closer look at the white space between the letters.

First printed poster

I got the first poster back from the printers today and I have to admit, it looks pretty good if I do say so myself. It's now framed and hanging in my dining room. If you want a bespoke poster doing or want to purchase one of the posters I've already created, give me a shout.

A new quote and lyrics design

Hey hey, I've created another quote to add to my quotes and lyrics series. This one is from one of my favourite movies starring my favourite actor. I'm not giving anything away. I was going to do this as two separate posters having "Baby, you are gonna miss that plane" as one poster and "I know" as another. I decided against it because I felt it wouldn't work as two posters and also all the Star Wars fans out there would of thought the "I know" was from Empire Strikes Back and to be honest, that might be a poster I do further down the line. If anyone wants a poster created of their favourite quote or lyric then give me a shout.

So here are some of my experiments with typography. They are quotes and song lyrics that I have a certain fondess for and have decided to portray in a poster format. This series will go on for as long as there are quotes and lyrics in the world because I'm having lots of fun creating them so stay tuned to any new posters I do.
